When in Venice make sure to pay a visit to the Bastianello Shop, one of the oldest Murano glass stores located in the historic St. Mark’s square. The family business, headed by Ida Bastianello, has been housed in its unique position fringed by the Baroque style Church of St. Basso since 1907. The business was established in 1907 by the famous photographer Tomaso Filippi (1852-1948) for the sale of his exclusive photographs and creations.

Following World War I, a young and ambitious 11 year old from Pordenone, Angelo Bastianello, sought and obtained work at the Filippi family’s store. The young Angelo immediately showed his great selling skills, his aptitude for learning foreign languages, and his loyalty to the Filippi family. After serving the country in World War II, he returned to Venice and married his awaiting and beloved fiancée Luigia.

In 1968, Angelo took over management of the business from Filippi’s daughters and continued to manage the store through the seventies and eighties, progressively innovating with the introduction of fine goods manufactured by some of the best craftsmen on Murano Island. At the end of 1989, Angelo was joined by his only daughter Ida, who now runs the business with her husband Gianni and her daughter Federica.
